The Dartmoor Pony - Roaming free on the moors
The Dartmoor Pony has inhabited the moorland of Southern Devon for many years and is related to the Exmoor Pony. Dartmoor Ponies were used to carry tin from the mines and were left to roam free on the moors after the closure of the mines.
They stand up to 12.2 hands. They are usually bay, brown or black although sometimes other colours can occur. They have a small head, strong neck, strong back and hindquarters. Again, they are robust, strong and versatile.
They are also good jumpers and have good stamina. They are reliable, sensible, kind and quiet. The Dartmoor Pony is also particularly long lived. They make an excellent child's pony and driving pony.
