The Exmoor pony - Intelligent and kind
The Exmoor pony has inhabited the Exmoor moorland of South-West Britain for many years. At the time, 104 Exmoor brood mares were recorded in the Doomsday Book of 1085 and by 1700, local farmers were allowed to graze their ponies on the Forest.
A Stud Book of Exmoor ponies existed but was destroyed in World War II and so a new Stud Book started in 1952. The Exmoor Pony stands up to 12.3 hands. They are brown, bay or dun with black points and are distinguished by their grainy muzzle. They have a wide forehead with large eyes, thick necks, deep chests, well laid back shoulders, a broad back and short legs.
They are robust, strong, and have good stamina. These ponies are also alert, intelligent and kind, again making them an ideal child's pony and driving pony.
