The Fjord Horse - Ideal family horse

The Fjord Horse originated in Scandinavia, It is believed that the breed originated in Western Norway. They are renowned for having a very calm and even temper. They make an ideal family horse because they are gentle and can be handled by almost anyone. It bears a striking resemblance to the wild Przevalski horse and they can be found in different shades of beige or dun including cream, gold or tan. They usually have a darker shade such as black or dark brown on the legs. They also have small brown marks over the eyes, cheeks and thighs and they have a two toned looking mane which gives them a distinctive look they sometimes have a dark dorsal stripe running from the poll to the tail. The horse's mane usually has dark inner hair and is traditionally cut in a crescent shape.

You can find Fjord horses all over Europe at family shows where they compete. They are a good horse for first time riders and for children to learn on. They are widely used for trekking and long distance riding. The Fjord horse is a regular winner in the Danish National Driving Championships and also does well in the dressage discipline.

The Fjord horse was used by the Vikings as a war horse and pack animal. These horses are hardy and can survive in conditions that many other breeds could not endure.
