The Icelandic Horse - Good natured, great with people

The Icelandic Horse is a smaller horse and comes in any colour and is rarely known to bite or kick. They are good natured horses and are usually kept in herds. They learn quickly from others and will respect humans if they are introduced properly when they are young. The Icelandic horse is a spirited horse and is extremely hardy. They are able to live outside all winter long if they have adequate shelter and food.

The Icelandic horse is small, it looks almost pony size, but it is registered and referred to as a horse. These horses can be ridden by adults if they are up to their correct weight. They will give a person a powerful ride and are very compact and agile. Icelandic horses perform in most disciplines at the appropriate levels. They have been known to compete in Dressage, Endurance, Le Trec and Cross Country events.

The breed is still used in its native Iceland for traditional farm work as well as for riding, racing and showing. These horses are extremely willing to please and easily trained. They have two unique gaits besides the typical walk, trot and cantor. There are special classes and competitions for showing off their special gaits. In 1874 the first official Icelandic race was held in Alureyri. There are still many races held throughout the country including both flat and steeplechase races.
