The New Forest Pony - A great all rounder
The New Forest pony is most commonly found in the forests of Hampshire, and our horse insurance customers may be surprised to learn that it has been recorded to have been in this area since the year 1016!
At between twelve and fourteen hands, these ponies can be found in most colours and are one of the mountain and moorland breeds. In the New Forest, where they roam free, they are often thought to be wild, but these intelligent and friendly horses are actually owned privately.
New Forest ponies can be driven, but are more commonly ridden. Their kind nature and relatively small size means that they are superb for children to ride, but many adults take to these horses too. They also make amazing pets since they have such a wonderful relationship with man.
Recognised by their solid frame, sloped shoulders and muscular quarters, the New Forest pony is surprisingly fast. With this versatile breed sometimes seen jumping, in polo and as part of dressage shows amongst other things, the New Forest pony has a variety of potential talents and can be a fantastic all-rounder. For many people who are looking for a family horse, the New Forest pony seems perfect since it offers everything that you could wish for.
The fact that this breed is easy to train is great for those people who do not want to spend too much of their time ensuring that their horse is ready to be ridden or put into shows. Their intelligence also makes them more attractive as a pet to some people, than perhaps other animals would.
With movements that are free, active and not exaggerated, these horses are a sheer joy to ride. The New Forest pony can also be trained to be ridden by the handicapped, and with their beautiful nature and willingness to please, it is easy to see why they are good for riding therapy, and so many other things too.
