Welsh Mountain Pony - Running wild since prehistoric times
Section A
Ponies and cobs in Wales have been noted since AD 930 and it is believed that the Welsh Section A has existed since prehistoric times running wild. The Welsh Pony and Cob Society was formed in 1901 and the first Welsh Stud Book for ponies up to 12.2 hands was produced. The Welsh Section A Pony stands up to 12 hands. They are any colour except Piebald and Skewbald. They have a small head, sloping shoulders, short back and short legs. They are robust and strong. They are intelligent, kind, courageous and spirited. They make an excellent child's pony.
Section B
This Welsh Pony is slightly larger than the Section A. A section in the Stud book was opened for Welsh Ponies under 13.2 hands. The Welsh Section B Pony stands up to 13.2 hands, again any colour except Piebald and Skewbald. They have small pony head, long neck, long sloping shoulders, deep girth, muscular back and quarters. Again they are robust and strong, with many of the same characteristics as above which also make them an excellent child's pony.
Section C
The Welsh Pony Section C is similar to the above but is stronger and thicker set than the refined Section B. This cob type welsh pony existed in the Middle Ages but after World War II, only three Section C stallions existed, a stallion and his two sons. They also stand up to 13.2 hands, have similar characteristics and make excellent riding, driving or trekking ponies.
Section D Pony; Welsh Cob
The Welsh Section D Pony, or Welsh Cob, became well established as a breed by the fifteenth century and was used mainly for farm work and as a means of transport, both in harness and ridden. The Welsh Cobs were also used by the army. They stand over 13.2 hands. Again, any colour except Piebald or Skewbald, they have a quality head, long neck, strong shoulders, deep girth, muscular back and quarters. Also robust and strong. They are intelligent, kind, courageous, willing and spirited. They make an excellent riding, driving and trekking pony.
