Keeping Your Horse Healthy - Tips from Animal Friends Equine Insurance
Your horse’s health depends at least in part on them have healthy lungs. If your horse is subjected to poor air quality or allergens they can develop respiratory disorders. Below are some basic things you should be aware of that will affect your horse’s health.
Choosing the right bedding will depend on a variety of things, including availability, cost and where your horse is housed. Bedding should be mould and dust free. It also needs to be absorbent and supportive. A stable with proper ventilation and good drainage are as important as your choice in horse bedding.
Dust can be an irritant to your horse. You want to make their area as dust free as possible. Mould is another thing that can harm your horse. Your horse can breathe in dangerous mould particles from bedding that was processed whilst still damp. So it is very important to check their bedding to make sure it is safe.
Your horse breathing in ammonia is another health concern. Ammonia is an irritant and comes from the horse’s urine and faeces. The ammonia can cause breathing difficulties and increase mucus production. This is why stable management is so important. The ammonia level is high when you are mucking out the stable and there is also a high level of dust during this time. It is neither practical or safe for your horse to be in the stable while you are mucking out. The more absorbent the bedding you use is, the lower the levels of ammonia will be.
To make sure your horse stays healthy you have to make sure you maintain their stable properly. You should remove your horse when you are mucking. It is also recommended that you use quality bedding and make sure the stable is well ventilated. If you have a good stable management system in place you will be able to keep your horse healthy and happy for a lifetime.
