Mange

This is a parasitic infestation caused by mites. It can affect any horse but it is particularly noticeable in those with deep feathering. The mites, also known as Bracken Bugs and Harvest Bugs are just visible and are most active during the summer months on long grass.

The mite attaches itself to the horse's legs and it injects a fluid into the leg tissue causing irritation and discomfort. The mite remains on the skin for a few days before dropping to the ground where it burrows into the soil and then matures into an adult after six weeks. The mature mites then feed on insects and forage.

There are 5 main types of mange: Sarcoptic Mange, Psoroptic Mange, Chorioptic Mange or Leg Mange and Demodectic Mange. You will notice hair loss, itching, stamping of the feet and inflammation. Treatment of the infection will depend on the level of seriousness. This may vary from regular soaking with shampoo, creams and sprays to drugs being administered to destroy any deep laid eggs. Always seek the advice of your vet.
