Strangles
Strangles is a potentially serious and contagious disease that can occur in horses. It's an infectious disease caused by bacteria and usually affects younger horses, but all horses are susceptible. This condition affects the horse's lymph nodes and causes swelling which can make it hard for your horse to breathe.
The infection can be passed from horse to horse or through contaminated equipment or tack. The infection starts in the horse's nasal cavity and migrates to the lymph nodes in their throat. The first symptom is fever and at the first sign of a fever your horse should be isolated from other horses.
A culture and PCR test is taken to test for strangles, you need an accurate diagnosis because this is very contagious and all horses that might be infected have to be quarantined. Sometimes it is difficult to determine when a horse is no longer contagious. It is highly recommended to have three separate cultures and PCR tests done before allowing your horses out of quarantine.
You can prevent this disease by vaccinating your horses and preventing your horse from being around a infected horse. The vaccination is not 100% effective but will help. Your vet will be able to examine your horse and suggest the treatments that will work best for them. It is highly recommended that if your horse develops a nasal discharge or fever you call the vet first. It is not wise to start the horse on penicillin before consulting a vet. It could lead to further problems for your horse.
Strangles is a very serious and infectious disease that can affect any and all horses that come in contact with an infected horse or their equipment and tack. It is recommended that at the first signs of this infection you should isolate the horse and immediately call your vet. By being diligent you can protect your horse from getting Strangles and ensure they live a long and healthy life.
