UK Charities - Helping our Animal Friends

Below are just three instances where Animal Friends have been able to use profits from the sale of pet and horse insurance policies to help equine charities in dire need. We hope this gives you a small idea as to how each and every one of our customers has helped contribute towards the vital work done by these very deserving charities.

Animal Friends Equine and Donkey Sanctuary, Devon

We have provided money to purchase a fluid warming cabinet that will be extremely valuable in the veterinary hospital for warming bags of intravenous fluids to body temperature. The cabinet provides a controlled method of warming fluids to a preset temperature and can be left switched on permanently so that the fluid can be warmed and maintained at the correct temperature and are available instantly for use. It is good practice to warm fluids prior to use as this can help to maintain patient core temperature, and this is especially important in critical care cases such as during surgery and for emergency hospital admissions.

Secondly, Animal Friends Equine Insurance are providing funds to purchase single use surgical drapes. The Donkey Sanctuary currently uses surgical drapes that require washing and re-sterilising between operations. Using single-use surgical drapes will help them to reduce the risk of surgical site infection. Draping of the surgical site provides a sterile surface and helps minimise the transfer of micro-organisms between non-sterile areas and the surgical wound. The Donkey Sanctuary have said: “Thank you for your wonderful support which is helping us to make a world of difference to the lives of donkeys. The new equipment will enable us to continue providing invaluable expert care”.

Well done and thank you to everyone who has helped to make this happen. Please visit their site to read more about the work done by The Donkey Sanctuary.

How the Mare and Foal Sanctuary was helped by Animal Friends

The Mare and Foal Sanctuary are a charity dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of horses and ponies in the Southwest of England. They have a lot of useful information on their website about horses, their health, their very popular "Ask a Question" section to ask their experts anything horse related, busy forums and lots more. Full details of all the charity's horses including photos are available, and they have a photo gallery too.

The Sanctuary is always looking for great loan homes for their horses so do look at their website or visit if you are in their area.

Animal Friends learned about the Sanctuary through a feature in the Mail about little Rebel, a four month old Dartmoor Pony saved from the annual sales in a terrible condition. As you will see, her front legs are deformed due to a bone growth defect.

The Sanctuary found out that Rebel could be cured if she underwent a special operation at Bristol Veterinary Hospital but the operation would cost over £2000. Animal Friends immediately stepped in and offered the full cost needed for Rebel to have her operation. She will be accompanied by her best friend, a little pony called "Bob" with whom Rebel is inseparable - Bob will be going along to give moral support!

Rebel has now left the hospital and is doing very well. He will have to go back shortly to have her pins and plates taken out and will then be well on the road to recovery.

Animal Friends Helps Donkeys by chipping in towards a Bobcat digger

The mission of Sussex-based SHADH founded by Lucy Fensom, is to promote the importance of basic welfare of donkeys in the Holy Land and wherever possible to teach compassion to achieve long-term changes for the better. Donkeys have been famously used in the Holy Land as beasts of burden for 5,000 years and very little value is attached to their well being. They can be bought for as little as £16 and many stray donkeys suffer from direct abuse and torture. SHADH contacted us to see if we could help with funding to buy much needed food for their rescued Donkeys in Israel.  We had heard of Lucy’s work helping animals for many years so we quickly jumped at the chance to help her. Whilst we can assist with money, Lucy is the real hero working tirelessly to help abused Donkeys in a very difficult and dangerous part of the world. We therefore hope that many other people will support Lucy’s essential work to help these gentle creatures.

Stop Press: We have just paid a large proportion of the purchase of a Bobcat Digging Machine which Lucy desperately needs to muck out 100+ donkeys and help with flooding at the Sanctuary.

“I am writing on behalf of Robert Silver and everyone at Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land to thank you so much for your extremely generous donation of £4,000 towards the cost of purchasing a “Bobcat” for use at the Sanctuary in Israel. Lucy is so excited about being able to buy this machine, which will save her and her colleagues a great deal of time and effort, and we are so grateful to you for helping to make this possible”.
