World Horse Welfare at Crufts to raise awareness

World Horse Welfare will have a trade stand during the four day event with the aim to raise awareness about the charity’s work and how fans of the dog show can help improve the lives of horses. World Horse Welfare will be at Crufts at Birmingham’s NEC between 8.15am and 7.30pm, Thursday 10 March to Saturday 12 March and between 8.15am and 6.30pm on Sunday 13 March.
People who are out walking their four-legged friends can often be the eyes and ears of World Horse Welfare by spotting potential problems. This was the case for Oscar who was found tethered to a fence near a motorway service station in 2008. Julian Brook stopped his car to walk his dog and spotted a horse which looked underweight and was tethered to a tree surrounded by very little grass and without water.
Julian contacted World Horse Welfare with his concerns and when Oscar was collected by the charity’s Field Officers, it was discovered that the rope had become so tightly wrapped around one of Oscar’s legs he could not move and it had caused nasty injuries. However, thanks to Julian who was walking his dog, Oscar was safely rescued, rehabilitated at one of our farms, and has now been successfully re-homed.
On the Crufts stand, World Horse Welfare will have lots of information to hand with a team of friendly and knowledgeable staff to help make people aware of what may or may not be a welfare concern, and what to look out for.
Hannah Colman who is Fundraising Assistant at World Horse Welfare said “This is a very exciting prospect for us as we have never had a presence at Crufts before. With around 142,000 people expected to come to the event again this year, we thought it was an opportunity not to be missed to tell people about all the fantastic work we do to help horses in the UK and internationally.”
When out walking with your dog, share your love for all animals and keep an eye out – you might just save the life of another horse like Oscar who could desperately need saving.
