Equine Iris Identification Launched

Horse ownership in America is set to become more secure as this week at the Annual Convention of American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) in San Antonio, Texas, as Global Animal Management launched their revolutionary eyeD, an equine identification system that utilizes iris scan technology.
Sounding similar to the fingerprint and iris scanning technology that is so often associated with evil lairs in a Bond film, this technology will provide fast and easy identification with more guarantee than a fingerprint, as not even a clones iris pattern will be the same. By using this technology, horse owners are ensuring a non-invasive means of identifying their animals that will provide a general use piece of identification that can be used across the history of the animal.
It works by taking a digital image of the eye, called an ‘eyeprint’, and this is stored digitally making it tamperproof, permanent and safe from damage. This is clearly a marked step forwards and will hopefully improve the standards of welfare for horses in both the equine industry as well as personal markets.
As a product, eyeD is currently only available to breed associations, commercial stables, horse owners and equine practitioners, but it is expected to be improved as a service to include more benefits and will more than likely make a move to the personal equine owning market – it will be interesting to follow the popularity of this product and see if it makes its way across to us in the UK.
