Horse care team works to improve Ethiopian road safety

A horse care team based in Ethiopia has won praise for its efforts in improving road safety for four-legged friends and their passengers or riders.
The group, from The Donkey Sanctuary, worked in Hawassa to try to reduce the figures of those killed or injured in traffic accidents, of which the African country has many.
The roads are unstable and dangerous in the area, meaning plenty of collisions take place - which poses an obvious danger to donkeys and their workers.
Reflective plates were created by the team in an effort to ensure those driving at night would be able to see the carts pulled by the beasts, while they also endeavoured to draw up a reasonable code of conduct to share with owners and motorists.
The Donkey Sanctuary was founded in 1969 after Dr Elisabeth Svendsen took on Naughty Face, the first of many such animals.
It was then registered as an official charity in 1972.
