Focus on breed: Friesian

The Friesian is a majestic breed of horse, originating from the Friesland in the Netherlands. They resemble a light draft horse but are far more graceful and nimble than their size might suggest. Despite the positives of such this beautiful breed, the Friesian has nearly become extinct on more than one occasion, but in more recent times the breed has risen in popularity both in harness and under saddle; the breed is now becoming popular in the field of dressage as well.

The Friesian is most often recognised by its black coat colour, but this is not the only distinguishing feature. They have a long, thick mane and tail, often wavy, as well as feathers which are long, silky hair on the lower legs; this is often left untrimmed. The Friesians average height is about 63 inches (1.6m or 15.3 hands) although this can vary between 58 to 68 inches (14.2 to 17 hands, 1.5m to 1.7m). Another feature of this breed is a brisk, high-stepping trot – the Friesian is considered a willing, active and energetic horse, but also as a gentle and docile animal with great presence and elegance.

Friesians are becoming increasingly popular due to their fantastic nature, trainability and hardiness. It’s not uncommon to see a Friesian doing really well in the dressage world. All in all they are brilliant all-rounders which can bring plenty of fun and fulfilment to you.
