Spain's Horse History

Horse Insurance

The influence of the Spanish horse is wide spread throughout the world. As an ethical horse insurance company we realise that understanding the history of breeds is important for their future survival. Spanish horses have been known throughout history as being of high quality and impressive horses. The Spanish horse was bred selectively and was called the Iberian horse. This horse was sought after by Greeks, Romans, Carthagians and Phoenicians.

There aren t hardly any distinguishing differences between the Spanish Andalusian and the Portugal Lusitano breed. Both breeds came to be the horses used by royalty all over Europe. The Spanish horse blood can be found in the new world breeds as well, including the Quarter Horse, Mustang and Appaloosa. The Spanish horse had some influence on British horses. However, it is not very noticeable in breeds such as the Cleveland Bay, Connemara and Welsh Cobs. Breeders from around the world have used the Spanish horse to improve their native breeds.

In the 7th century the Moors invaded Spain and brought Barb horses with them. The Barb was crossed with Spanish stock and the Andalusian breed was born. European nobles preferred the Andalusian mount and it had a major impact on the Lipizzaner breed produced in the 1500 s. Today it is one of the world s most desirable riding horses because of it flashy appearance.

In Spain the Andalusian is called the Pura Raza Espanola. Which means the pure Spanish horse and the purity of the breed is carefully monitored and maintained. You can see the pure Spanish blood in these horses, which are distinctive and elegant.

They have a distinguished appearance and are usually light gray or white in colour. They are a compact horse and have very thick and long manes and tails. They have a slightly flat nose and small ears. The Andalusian horse has a superb temperament and are magnificent looking horses. Spanish horses were a major influence throughout the ages in Europe and the New World.
