Horse insurance – Tack and saddlery

Animal Friends are helping you understand the ins and outs of horse insurance so when it comes to look for the best policy, it will be less of a headache for you, and also ensuring that you have protected all the important aspects around your horse.

Today, we are looking at the additional benefits on your horse policy which involves tack and saddlery.  Many people do not realise that your mandatory cover on your horse policy will not cover any tack or saddlery, you should always ask the insurer what additional benefits you can add to your policy which will make sure that all you include all the extras you need.

Tack and saddlery is a benefit which can be easily over looked.  These are everyday items which you will undoubtedly use and really could not live without; your saddle and bridle.

If your tack is lost, stolen or damaged you will be able to use your horse insurance to help recover your losses or to repair any damaged items.

With lavish “brand names” of tack which have expense price tags becomes a thief’s birthday as tack has never been so expensive and indulgent. An Albion dressage saddle can easily set you back in excess of £2,000, not forgetting we all like to have a jumping saddle, and a GP thrown in for good measure! If these were taken or damaged, you would be very hard pushed to find the money to replace them.

Bridles can be as cheap as chips, however, I have come across (and perhaps am guilty of owning) custom made bridles which are specifically made for the individual horse. Think about double bridles; you are hard pushed to find a one for under £150 which is of good quality.

Of course, tack is now seen as an extension of fashion; the more “bling” the better; or so they say…

Getting back to the point – Tack and saddlery is no cheap business, and all too commonly we hear about tack rooms being targeted by thieves.  No matter how expensive the price tag on your tack, if it is stolen, you would be devastated. Ensuring that you have your tack and saddlery included on your policy will help in this situation.

It is wise to look through your policy wording to double check what your policy includes; usually rugs are not included on your policy, however, all saddlery items which are normally attached to the horse whilst being used for the activities which you have insured your horse to take part in will be covered.
