Horse Insurance
Horse insurance can be complicated to get your head around as many policies are “pick and mix”, which can leave you wondering if you have taken out enough insurance to protect your horse should he require veterinary treatment or kick a car whilst out hacking.
Many horse owners decide that they do not require insurance for their horse; they may think that it is a waste of money or that their horse “just won’t get ill”. Either way, it can be a silly mistake if you choose not to take out enough insurance for your equine friend.
Insuring your horse need not be expense. If you have a budget, you will need to consider which aspects of insurance are more of a priority than others. For example, if you do not include tack and saddlery on your insurance, this will reduce your monthly premium, but may also be covered on house contents insurance (depending on where you keep tack). You may decide that having veterinary fees on a policy is more important that saddlery for this reason.
When deciding on what benefits you would like to have on your horses’ policy, consider what you will be doing with them; happy hacking? Competing? If you will be planning on doing competitions, what level will this be?
Asking yourself these questions will mean that you will take out insurance which will cover you for what you require; there is no point in taking out an all-singing-all-dancing policy which you cannot afford. Equally, not taking out enough insurance can be disastrous for both you and your horse.
Mandatory cover on all horse insurance will include the following; death, theft and straying. These are all aspects of any horse insurance, but also give a good foundation for you to build up a policy which will provide protection for your horse.
Most commonly, veterinary fee cover and public liability are the most popular choices on horse insurance but there are also many other benefits which can be chosen to build on the mandatory cover which will enable you to take out a comprehensive policy for your beloved equine friend.
These benefits include:
- *Veterinary fees
- *Public liability
- *Loss of use
- *Personal accident
- *Tack and saddlery
- *Trailer
Over the next couple of weeks, we will be looking into each of these benefits to give you a clearer understanding of what is available for you and your horse when taking out a policy.
