Types of Horse Colours and Coat Markings

Horses come in many different colours and with a variety of different markings. Animal Friends Equine Insurance has listed merely a brief description for our customers of some of the common patterns and colours that are used when talking about different types of horses. Please feel free to post your comments and add to the list!
A Bay horse has a brown body and legs. The mane and the tail are both black. The shade of brown can vary from very pale brown to very dark brown.
A Cremello horse is often referred to as an albino horse, even though they are not a true albino. The mane, body and tail of the horse are extremely pale. This horse can range in colour from almost white to a pale cream colour. They also have blue eyes and can be prone to sunburn during the summer months.
A chestnut horse has a body and legs that are golden or ginger and the shade can vary. The mane and the tail are the same colour as the body.
A Dun horse has a creamy gold colour. The tail and mane are black and it also has a black line running down its back.
A Piebald is a black horse with the overo or tovero pattern or a combination of the two. The amount of white and black vary immensely. Each pattern on a Piebald horse is unique and the mane and tail can be black, white or both white and black.
A Roan coat pattern is a pattern that can be combined with any colour. It has white hairs ticked through the entire coat. There are different names often given to a roan coat that has to do with the base coat, such as strawberry roan or blue roan.
A skewbald is a horse that is any colour except black and has the overo or the tovero pattern. Each horse has a unique pattern and the amount of white and patches can vary. The colour patches can be any colour other than black.
