Spring is coming..
With the lighter evenings, rise in temperatures and daffodils starting to bloom; it can only mean one thing – spring is coming! This is good news for horse owners, as it means we can actually see our horses in the day light, something of which has become a distant memory in the last few months.
Our equine friends are starting to shed their winter coats, so at the end of a good grooming session, we end up hairier than our horses. Obviously for those with clipped out horses the task in hand is not so bad, although horses still seem to malt everywhere; the inside of their rugs seems to generate the most build-up of hair.
Now is a perfect opportunity to get your horse checked out by the vet, a general once over including his teeth and back will ensure that your horse is in tip top shape for the year ahead.
The show season is due to start soon, so now is an excellent time to get your horse fit and ready to show the world what you are both made of. So it’s a wise idea to book some lessons to get you both focused and prepared for a busy season. After all, practice does make perfect!
Don’t forget to make the most of the lighter evenings, paddock management will have undoubtedly slipped over the winter months, so now is a great time to get out in the field, poo pick, fix fencing and generally ensure that your horses’ field is as safe as possible.
You may also get the bug for a spring clean of your stable. Pick a sunny day to de-cobweb and disinfect your stable so that it can air and dry out before your horse comes back in from the field. This will reduce dust in the stable which will benefit your horses respiratory system, reducing the risk of those pesky vet bills.
Spring is a real “Feel Good” time for any horse owner; after a long and dark winter you can find it difficult to remember why you love your four-legged friend; after all those dark evenings when you are up to your knees in mud, frozen taps and too many rugs to mention. With spring on its way, we cannot wait until its light enough to go for lovely evening hacks and really enjoy all our time with our favourite Animal Friend.
