Some Tips on Horse Tack

The term tack is used to describe the saddle, bridle and accessories that are worn by a horse. There are many different types of saddles and bridles. You should make sure to use the right tack for the intended purpose and it needs to fit correctly. Ill-fitting or damaged tack can cause your horse discomfort and could lead to serious injuries. Horse tack can be expensive, and a good horse insurance policy will offer cover for the theft of this vital equimpent.

A horse's bridle can be made of different materials including leather, webbing or some type of synthetic material. They come in three sizes, which are pony, cob and full and can be adjusted to fit your horse. The headpiece should lie comfortably behind the horse's poll and the brow band should rest across their forehead. The bit should lie comfortably in the horse's mouth.

The bit is one of the ways a rider communicates with a horse by using the reins. There are several different types of bits. A snaffle bit is the mildest and is the one that is used the most. You have to make sure the bit is the right size for your horse. When selecting the right bit you have to take into consideration your horse's age, level of schooling and the size and shape of their mouth.

It is very important that the saddle fits the horse and is positioned correctly on its back. The saddle should be balanced and level and not tipping one way or the other. It is better if a rider uses a mounting block or gets a leg up when mounting their horse. This way the saddle will not get twisted up and strain the horses back.

A vital piece of tack is the girth, because it attaches the saddle to the horse and helps the saddle stay in the proper position. A girth should be wide and smooth so it fits comfortably around the horse's breast. A girth that is fastened properly should rest about one hand's width behind the horse's elbow.

It is very important to be knowledgeable about the different kinds of tack, how to use them correctly, and how to take care of your tack. Using well cared for tack correctly allows for you and your horse to have a pleasant, safe and comfortable ride. Also find out from your insurance company about saddlery and tack insurance.
