BHS Horse Owner’s Certificate - Level 2
Once you have received your Level 1 BHS Horse Owner’s Certificate you can then go on to Level 2.
Below you will find a general overview of what you have to be knowledgeable about to earn the BHS Level 2 certificate.
You will need to be informed about shoeing and knowing when it is time to reshoe. You will need a basic knowledge of the structure of a horse’s foot. It will cover blacksmith tools and their uses. You will need to be able to remove a shoe safely in an emergency situation. It will cover basic first aid and recognizing common injuries. You will need to be educated about arresting bleeding and treatments for different types of wounds.
You’ll need to be knowledgeable about watering and feeding of stabled horses and horses that are out in the field. You will also need to be familiar with feeding in all seasons and feeding for light work. Grassland management will be included. Grassland management includes maintenance of gates, shelters, fences and watering, as well as keeping a good horse pasture. You need to be knowledgeable about harmful weeds and how to control them.
Saddlery will be covered including how to care for it and inspecting it for soundness. You need basic knowledge on fitting and using items such as breastplates, martingales and boots. It will cover all aspects of horse insurance too.
You will need to have an understanding of the stable routine for two horses. It includes all jobs associated with the care of two horses, such as cleanliness of the yard, paintwork and drains and gutters. You will need to be informed about the different types of bedding and how to take care of them. You will have to be knowledgeable about the Highway Code.
It also includes the Country Code and the correct and courteous use of bridleways.
These are things that you have to be knowledgeable about to pass the Level 2 Horse Owner’s Certificate Exam. Once you have passed this level you can then move on to Level 3.
