BHS Horse Owner’s Certificate - Level 4

Level 4 of the Horse Owner’s Certificate is the last level and is also the hardest. You have to be very knowledgeable about many different aspects of horse care. Below you will find a general overview of what areas will be covered in Level 4.

You will have to know all about the reproduction, digestive, respiratory and immune system of a horse. You will have to know how they functions and the common problems associated with these systems, such as COPD and Colic. You will have to know about the teeth and ageing characteristics. You will need to be familiar with the structure of the mouth and common problems that occur in a horse.

You will have to be well informed about vitamins and minerals and there uses. You will have to list the basic principles of sick nursing and when and why it is implemented. You will have to know weights and types of feeds available for Competition, Hunting, and Riding School horses.

You will be asked to name the different types of remedial shoes and explain why and in what situations they are used. You have to be able to explain the basics about fitting various saddles including general purposes, dressage, jumping and cross country. You also have to describe the uses of specific bits and gadgets such as draw reins, De Gouge and Market Harborough.

You will also need a general knowledge of the departments and structure of the BHS. This includes the BHS Register of Instructors and the BHS qualification system. You need to know what action has to be taken in case of an accident. You also need to know about RIDDOR and the legal obligations of an Instructor.

These are all things that will be covered on Level 4 of the BHS Horse Owner’s Certificate exam.
