Horse Eye Care is important too!
At Animal Friends we know all too well how important it is to learn how to keep your horse healthy; everything possible should be done to make sure all their needs are taken care of. Besides providing a proper diet and taking care of their coat and feet a horse also needs regular eye care. Sometimes a horse's eyes are overlooked when it comes to equine health. A horse's eyes are vital to keeping them healthy, active and safe.
In Scotland recently, horse owners were told to be aware of keratitis. Keratitis is a horse eye condition that can be serious if not taken care of quickly. It is also very painful for the horse and can cause permanent injury. It forms on the surface of the eye and is treated with anti viral medicines. The key to proper eye care, like with so many other horse ailments and illnesses is to catch a condition in the early stages before it can form into something that could cause serious damage.
It has been proven that horses that are blind or have bad eye sight can still lead a healthy happy life. It has been shown that a horse with blindness or poor eye sight seem to benefit from having a companion that can see. They usually will not do very well in groups or herds, but do well with a companion. You also want to keep the horse in a familiar area so they will know their surroundings.
It is not uncommon for a horse to have an eye problem sometime during their life. It can be caused by an injury, infection, allergies or something more serious, like cancer. Some eye problems will need advanced eye care treatment. You should consult with your vet whenever you see a problem with your horse's eyes, and check the terms of your horse insurance policy to find out which types of treatment are covered.
Proper and preventive eye care will keep your horse seeing everything clearly. Their eye sight is vital for them to lead a productive active life. Having regular eye examination is key to helping keep your horse happy and healthy for a lifetime.
