The proper name for a donkey is the Latin name Equus asinus. It is also known as an ass, a burro by Spanish influenced Americans, sometimes a moke or a cuddy. Donkeys are related to ponies and horses. They have different physical characteristics than horses so they are slower and less powerful than horses. They can run fairly fast over a short distance.

Donkeys need a good quality diet to stay healthy; it should consist of hay and barley straw. You can feed barley straw freely to your donkey but hay should be limited so they don't become overweight. During the winter when there is little grazing you need to supplement their diet to make sure they are getting everything they need. Pregnant and nursing Jennys and their foals need additional feed to ensure their nutritional needs are being met.
