“A mothers dream” M&M pony in tragic trailer crash

Animal Friends are saddened to hear that a lovely home-produced Welsh Section A show pony died on the M4 last weekend on Sunday 6th March on her way back from Addington Manor after competing at the Ponies (UK) Winter Championships.

The seven-year-old pony was on her way back from the competition on Sunday evening when a car crashed into the back of the trailer which she was travelling in near Swansea.

Penual Jilly, who was given the Lee-Smith reserve supreme at the show, could not be saved from her injuries, despite on-site vets efforts.

She was described as “a mothers dream” by her owner, Hayley Grota, who had won many in-hand classes with her. “Jilly was a lovely, kind pony with a fantastic temperament.”

This was her first championship ridden by Hayley’s six-year-old daughter, Liberty who had many years left on the pony.

"She was 11.3 ½ hh and would have lasted Libby for years."

The trailer which was used to travel was not the usual method of transport for Jilly, but the Grotas horse box was booked in to be resprayed at the time.

Our thoughts go out to the Grotas family for their tragic loss of Jilly.
