A vital component of horse care is ensuring that you as the rider are in excellent physical condition, it has been claimed.

Betsy Carter, writing for Fredericksburg.com, explained that as winter means equines get less exercise, thanks to treacherous weather and dangerous conditions, the animals are more likely to be skittish and high in energy.

As such, the people in the saddles need to be fighting fit in order to properly control the situation, for the benefit of both themselves and their steeds.

"You know you are fit when the horse cannot bounce you out of the saddle It is a good feeling to know you can keep your body centered and in the tack during explosive or unexpected movements of your horse," she added.

To achieve this level of condition, Ms Carter suggested riders add core workouts - such as sit-ups - to their exercise routines, as well as plenty of stretching to increase flexibility.

Moreover, purchasing horse insurance could help equestrians get that secure feeling in the saddle as well.
