Horse care sees stable hand injured

One young woman's interest in horse care resulted in her sustaining a serious injury while calming one of her equines at a farm in Depden, Suffolk.
Jenny Butler, 24, slipped onto a fence while looking after the horse, which resulted in a one-inch spike entering her neck, narrowly missing both major arteries and her windpipe.
In spite of this, however, the plucky stable hand - who is now recovering at home - was still able to raise the alarm using her mobile phone and called for help.
Discussing the accident, owner of the farm in question Andrew Read noted that he had to support her as they waited for the ambulance as she was still stuck to the spike.
"She was very calm. She knew it was a serious situation. She was very lucky," he remarked.
This follows the case of Thea Maxfield, who sustained a hangman's fracture after falling from her mount in 2009 and, thanks to physiotherapy from Don Gatherer - formerly of the Great Britain Olympic Team - she is now back in the saddle.
